OEM Start-Up & Build-Out

OEM start-up marks the point when a manufacturer begins production for a new model year. Build-out marks the point when production for the current model year ends. Fleet teams use both dates to plan vehicle orders, replacements, specifications, and upfits.

We recommend having a replacement plan in place 6-9 months before the vehicle needs to be in service. The purchase order should be completed by you and with your FMC well before the order bank could open. Your FMC can submit the order with the OEM as soon as the bank opens, securing your place in line.

Start with the date your drivers need vehicles in service, then work backward through production timing, upfit requirements, transportation, and registration. Ordering early can give your fleet more flexibility when you need specific models, trims, or equipment.

A final fleet order date is the manufacturer’s deadline for fleet orders for a specific model year. After that date, your available options may shift to remaining inventory, a later model year, or a different vehicle.

Order-to-delivery timing can vary by manufacturer, model, powertrain, available production capacity, vehicle equipment, upfit needs, transportation, and demand. Check timing regularly as OEM production plans can change.

Build-out can limit your ability to order a vehicle your fleet currently uses. Review upcoming build-out dates alongside your replacement schedule so you have time to evaluate the next model year, an alternative vehicle, or an updated specification.

Use OEM production dates to create a forward-looking acquisition calendar. Match model-year timing with your vehicle life cycle plan, budget, driver needs, upfit schedule, and in-service dates to reduce last-minute decisions.
